Your Guide To Understanding An Impaired Drainfield And Its Impact On Your Septic System

If you have ever had the misfortune of living near someone who failed to replace or maintain a damaged, old or nonfunctional septic tank when they should have, you are undoubtedly aware of the trouble and damage that doing so can cause. The drainfield is a key component of the septic system, and when it is not working as it should, the entire system is at risk. Therefore, it is a good idea for every responsible homeowner to be aware of the following information about impaired drainfields.

When The Area Where The Drainfield Is In The Yard Has A Bad Odor And/Or Is Wet

It is easy to overlook the drainfield, especially if you do not spend a lot of time in that area of the yard or if you do not know what to look for. Therefore, you should know that if that area is wet, even when the rest of the yard has dried from a rainstorm or there has not been any rain for a while, it is a strong sign that the drainfield has a major problem. In addition, the unpleasant and pungent smell commonly associated with the contents of a septic tank lingering freely in your yard frequently indicates that the drainfield is a problem.

Unfortunately, while there are a few steps that may allow you to briefly delay the necessary work, as discussed later, there is not a way to permanently repair it. In that instance, you will need an entirely new drainfield, unless you are fortunate enough that the issue is a single clog to the drainfield that can be quickly removed.

Temporarily Delaying The Installation Of A New Septic Tank

As you may have guessed, a new septic tank is often a costly endeavor and there is rarely a good time for your existing unit to fail. Therefore, it is a good idea to be aware that there are a few ways that might allow you to delay a septic tank install for a brief period of time.

One way to do so is to have the septic tank pumped, which can diminish the load of the drainfield. However, it is unwise to do so if the area is flooded at the time, as that unnecessary risk to the pipes can result in more significant damage. You can also minimize the work that the septic tank does by closely rationing your water usage. If you need to wait for the area to dry or if the aforementioned tips are not helpful, it is a good idea to section off that area of the yard to minimize exposure of the contents of the septic tank.

In conclusion, septic tanks play an enormous role in the health and well-being of many individuals who live in rural areas. As a result, if you depend on a septic tank for water and waste disposal, it is imperative for you to consider the above facts when you suspect that an issue with its drainfield has occurred.
